Africa, the Sun and Shadows is an absorbing and detailed biography of Alexis Preller's life and artistic journey. It leads the reader through the twists and turns of Prellers uncompromising career and passionate private life, tracing the evolution of his fascinating iconography along the way. It is a story filled with drama and told with empathy and skill.
In addition to a twelve-page colour section, the text I s supported by illustrations on every page. Studies by noted photographers Contance Stuart-Larrabee, Richard Cutler and David Goldblatt, among others, and snapshots from Prellers private albums provide contemporary images of the artist, his studios and homes, and the treasured artifacts that were his frequent inspiration.

This edition has become very scarce, and although a bit uncomfortable with mainly black and white photographs throughout, par the twelve-page colour section, it is still an important text for the South African art audience.
