Alfagrog is a porous foamed and hardened ceramic material, which is lightweight, strong and inert. It's high surface area makes it the natural choice for colonisation by micro organisms in biological filtration systems resulting in cleaner water. It is manufactured using various clays and raw materials that are rapidly fused at high temperature to produce a foamed ceramic porous mass. This is crushed and sectioned to a convenient particle size. It is manufactured using materials which are safe for use round all livestock and plants.
The optimum media surface area is suitable for all varying flow rates. It is pH neutral, and suitable for freshwater and marine setups. Anerobic media, like Alfagrog, is great for helping to reduce nitrates and keep water clear.
Alfagrog chunks vary in size and are typically 40-60mm width per piece. 500g = approx 10-15 pieces.
Benefits of Alfagrog over other filter media:
Why is Alfagrog so effective?
A key to effective biological filtration is surface area where nitrifying bacteria can grow and thrive. You want to select media that has the highest surface area possible. This allows the most beneficial bacteria to colonise and remove waste from your aquarium water.
Alfagrog has one of the highest surface area by volume ratios compared to other types of filter media on the market. It's made with a highly porous "foamed" material that has many thousands of tiny pockets in which bacteria can thrive. These pockets make it an ideal material for biological filters.
The manufacturer ensures that no harmful substances are in Alfagrog thus protecting the health of your fish or plants. It's pH neutral and recommended for both freshwater and marine applications.
The specific surface area of Alfagrog E40 is 45, that is 45 m² per liter. This means a smaller filtration unit can be used when using Alfagrog to attain the same results as a much larger unit filled with inferior and often more expensive filter media.
Other applications
Alfagrog can also be used as decorative aquatic gravel, aquarium landscaping and in a wide variety of applications. Larger size pieces can be used as a substitute for live rock.
