Lucerne seed (Alfalfa) grows a highly nutritious perennial legume used as premium forage for livestock (cattle, horses, sheep) or as hay/silage, known as the "queen of forage crops" for its protein, minerals, and deep drought-resistant roots. It needs inoculation with Rhizobium bacteria, well-drained soil (pH 6-8), and careful management for establishment, often planted in prepared beds or mixed with companion grasses, benefiting from proper watering and fertilization to produce high yields.

Key Characteristics & Benefits:
Nutrient-Rich: High in protein, vitamins (A, D, K), and minerals (Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium).
Drought Tolerant: Deep taproots access deep soil moisture, making it great for drier climates.
Soil Improvement: As a legume, it fixes nitrogen, improving soil fertility.
Versatile: Grown for hay, silage, or pasture; can be grazed or used as microgreens/fodder.
Planting & Growing Tips:
Soil: Prefers deep, well-drained soils with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH.
Preparation: Clear weeds; incorporate lime if needed; create a fine, firm seedbed.
Sowing: Sow 25-30kg/ha in irrigated areas; use a Rhizobium inoculant (like Rhizobium meliloti) for best nitrogen fixation.
Weed Control: Crucial during establishment; herbicides or companion grasses (fescue, timothy) can help.
Management: Cut at 10% flowering or when regrowth starts from the crown for best quality, especially for hay.
