I first watched this movie years ago and it has remained in my mind ever since. It compelled me to read the book some time later too! There is no good or bad side in this war movie, just young boys eager (or not) to serve their country and being exposed to the unimaginable live of trench warfare!

A second film version 1979 (the first was made in 1930) of Erich Maria Remarque's story about a group of idealistic young Germans recruited to fight on the Western Front in 1914.
