Almost Forgotten, Never Told by Lawrence G. Green is a classic work of South African Africana, maritime history and coastal storytelling, first published by Howard Timmins in Cape Town in 1965. Green, one of South Africa's most prolific and widely collected popular historians and travel writers, built his reputation on preserving unusual stories, forgotten characters, local legends and episodes from the country's past.
In this fascinating volume, Green turns his attention particularly to the South African coastline and the remarkable people, ships and events associated with it. Almost Forgotten, Never Told brings together stories of maritime adventure, shipwrecks, sailors, coastal communities, salvage, travel and historical incidents, extending from Cape waters into wider seafaring territory. Contemporary bibliographical sources describe the work as dealing with tales of the South African coast, while the original subtitle describes it as a book of people and places, dramas and adventures along the coast, with voyages into deeper waters.
Almost Forgotten, Never Told contains 292 pages and includes illustrations and photographic plates, making it an appealing addition to a collection of Africana, South African maritime history, Cape history or Lawrence G. Green first editions. The colourful illustrated dust jacket, designed by Leng Dixon, is particularly evocative of the book's maritime subject matter.
