He was the son of Alfred Barlow, who was a member of the Orange Free State's Volksraad and owner-editor of The Friend in Bloemfontein . He began his career as a reporter at The Friend and at 23 became the paper's editor for a while. As a razor-sharp political reporter, much later he was also editor of the Sunday Express and Daily Express in Johannesburg and the founder of Arthur Barlow's Weekly . He was involved in several publishing houses and dive companies. In his early thirties he joined the Legislative Assembly of the Orange Free State Colony and remained a controversial political figure for years.
