The Alocasia Cuprea is one of the most striking alocasias around. With its glossy, almost metallic leaves that shine in shades of green, bronze, and copper, it's a plant that instantly grabs attention. These are well-grown plants that bring a bold, exotic feel to any space.

Botanical name: Alocasia Cuprea

Commonly known as: Mirror Plant, Jewel Alocasia, Alocasia Red Secret

The Alocasia Cuprea is a true jewel in the aroid family, famous for its extraordinary leaves that look almost metallic. Depending on the light, the foliage shifts between deep green, bronze, and shimmering copper, giving it a truly unique presence. Unlike some of its larger cousins, the Cuprea stays more compact, making it suitable for tabletops, shelves, or as a standout in a plant collection.

Alocasia Cuprea Care Guide

Light:

Alocasia Cuprea enjoys bright, indirect light. Too much direct sun can scorch its leaves, while too little light causes them to lose their shine and colour.

Watering:

Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Allow the top 23cm of soil to dry slightly before watering again. These plants dislike drying out completely and don't do well sitting in excess water.

Temperature & Humidity:

Native to the tropics, this plant thrives in warmth (1828°C) and loves humidity. In drier South African homes, misting or using a humidifier will help prevent leaf edges from crisping.

Soil & Repotting:

For healthy growth, use our Aroid Mix, or make your own using Barks Unlimited Potting Soil combined with Perlite. Adding Bark Chips at repotting time will keep roots airy and well-drained. Repot every 12 years to refresh the mix and allow space for growth.

Fertiliser: Feed monthly during the growing season with Controlled Release Fertiliser or top up with Organic Fertiliser to encourage steady foliage production.

Pests: Watch out for spider mites and aphids, which sometimes go for its broad leaves. Treat with insecticidal spray if needed and wipe leaves down occasionally to keep them looking their best.

The Alocasia Cuprea is perfect for anyone looking to add a plant with genuine wow factor. Compact but dramatic, it's an unforgettable addition to a plant collection.
