Commonly known as: Alocasia Nairobi Nights
Botanical name: Alocasia hybrid cultivar 'Nairobi Nights'
If you're into plants that look like they belong in a moody forest or a high-end interior design magazine, Alocasia 'Nairobi Nights' delivers. Its arrow-shaped leaves are a deep green with a purplish huealmost black in the right lightand its veins run bold and bright down each leaf. The finish is slightly velvety and matte, adding texture and depth without being overly glossy.
This is a hybrid variety that thrives in warm, bright, humid environments, much like most Alocasias. It appreciates a bit of attention and care but rewards you with incredibly dramatic foliage that looks good even on its slower growth days. It does best in a spot with bright, indirect light and a little extra humidity to keep those leaves looking pristine.
Light requirements:
Bright, indirect light is best. Too much direct sun can scorch the velvety surface, while too little light will cause the plant to lose its richness and grow leggy. A spot near an east-facing window works beautifully.
💧 Watering:
Allow the top 35cm of soil to dry out before watering. These plants don't like wet feet but also don't want to dry out completely. Keep an eye on the leavesdrooping or curling usually means it's thirsty, while yellowing can point to overwatering.
🌡 Humidity & Temperature:
This Alocasia enjoys a humid environment. Use a pebble tray or humidifier, especially during winter. It prefers temperatures between 1826°C and should be kept away from cold draughts or dry air.
🪴 Potting mix:
For optimal drainage and healthy roots, you can use our premixed Aroid Mix, or you can create your own potting mix using Barks Unlimited Potting Soil combined with Perlite and some chunky Bark Chips. Repot annually in spring or when roots outgrow the pot. If you are really keen to your plant to hydro - try out our perfectly blended Pon.
🌱 Feeding:
Feed every 34 weeks during the growing season with a controlled release fertiliser or a gentle organic fertiliser. Hold off in winter when the plant is semi-dormant.
🐛 Pests & Problems:
Watch for spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs, especially in dry air. Keep leaves clean and check regularly under the foliage. If pests appear, treat promptly with an insecticidal spray.
Pruning & propagation:
Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves at the base. You can divide the rhizomes when repotting if the plant has produced offshoots, but be gentleit doesn't like root disturbance too often.
