The ads are unobtrusive and don't "pop-up" while reading. They are only on the home menu and screensaver, ie when you are not reading. If the ads really bother you, they can be removed later from inside your Amazon account for a small fee. (+/-R200)
A common misperception: One does not need to be in a Wi-Fi hotspot to load books onto the kindle. Books are small and easy to download using your existing internet connection. You can then transfer books from your computer to the kindle using the included USB cable.
