I've indicated HYDROTHERMAL under treatment. WHY: This is a genuine Amethyst, showing all the characteristics of amethyst and was sold to me as a natural stone. However most experts I've consulted say that with stones this large, the possibility is 99.5% that its a synthetic, most likely produced by the hydrothermal method, resulting in stones that are identical to natural stones. Definitive testing would require sending it to a lab e.g. EGL in JHB which charges R275/ct (in this case R6000 plus). Also it is possible some of the tests would be destructive. Simply put: I can't (& the gemologists I 've spoken to wouldn't) put pen to paper certifying that its 100 % natural or synthetic, without lab certification. So I've indicated hydrothermal to denote the possibility. | |
