  Amethyst: comes from the Greek word A, meaning "not" and Methuskein, meaning "to intoxicate"; a reference to the ancient belief that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness. It is the most highly valued and recognizable gemstone of the microcrystalline Quartz family. It is prized as a semiprecious gem for its violet colour.
