Description: An antique Georgian painted Silk and Embroidered Jesus and Rebecca at the Well Ref. AR/19
Maker: Unknown. Likely the be English.
Date: Late Georgian, 1780 -1820 estimate.
History: Silk embroidered Pictures/Paintings were very popular from the 1780 1840 era. Usually the background and faces were painted in a watercolour and the rest of the scene embroidered. Painted by known artists of the time, they were rather expensive and consequently only schools with high-paying students from upper and middle class families worked these paintings. Classical Bible themes were popular and the picture offered is entitled Jesus and Rebecca at the Well although the description Jesus and the Samaritan Woman is also to be found.
Description: The Silk Embroidered Painting offered shows a typical painted background with long and short stitch work and set in a wooden frame.
Condition: It appears that the painting was folded in half at one stage and the result is that some paint has flaked away along the fold line before it was framed. What looks like a large water stain (maybe dampness) can be observed on the right side of the painting.
Dimensions: The frame measures 66.5 cm x 56.5 cm.
Price: R1800.00
