Description: An antique Kangxi Powder Blue porcelain plate dated 1662-1722. Ref. P104
Maker: Jingdezhen, China
Date: 1662-1722
History: Following the fall of the Ming dynasty, the Kangxi emperor ordered the re-opening of the kilns in Jingdezhen and some of the finest ceramics in China were produced during this period. Famille verte porcelain can be very accurately dated to Kangxi. The name, famille verte, is known as wucai in China, meaning five colours.
Description: The vivid green enamels used and the polychrome overglazes of red, yellow, blue and black colours helps to identify the plate. Gilding is used to enhance the plants and very fine gilded grasses cover the cobalt blue mottled background. The plate is divided into one central cartouche showing a figure with surrounding plants whilst the border shows a further eight cartouches decorated with plants and all is highlighted by gold.
Condition: Some wear to the gold, especially the rim. On the reverse we find many glaze cracks now slightly discoloured. A similar situation on the front but the glaze cracks are not that noticeable.
Dimensions: 21.3 cm in diameter and 2.8 cm in height.
