An Antique Victorian Era Cast Iron Fire Place Door Frame / Surround.
Bought at a SA Military auction in the early 1970's, this piece was removed with 3 similar pieces from Voortrekkerhoogte, Pretoria (By the SA Military of course....). Imported from Britain for the houses built for the British officers, early 1900's. These were wooden buildings, and Voortrekkerhoogte was still named Roberts Heights.
This beautiful piece features elegant Victorian art nouveau lines and design. Beautifully ripple textured background frame accent with elegant floral sprays along each side panel & top.
The arched mantel portion features art nouveau ornate floral swirls. Top section slightly damaged by rough handling soldiers...but can be restored. The top on the opening has a sloped mantle style design which lines up with the bowed top of a fire door.
Fabulous bold features, yet elegant lines & design work. Structure design to hold a grate that fits over the extruding brackets on the frame which hooks over and lock on the fireplace frame. Designed for a coal fireplace but can fit any small wood fireplace.
Beautifully restored in Black Fire Resistant Oxide, front only. The back has loops to support securing within the fireplace opening. This piece can be used for its proper use, or for architectural / design / ornamental wall hanging. Either way it will be a great conversation piece!
