This wonderful and rare antique (c1930's) cast iron sewing machine treadle wheel (flywheel) is an amazing find and measures 32cm across x roughly 8cm wide. The treadle wheel was essentially the cog between the foot peddle and the sewing machine which allowed the seamstress/ tailor to have his hands available when making a garment. Initially the sewing machines had a handle on the machine that the seamstress would turn with one hand while trying to manage the fabric with her other hand.
Treadle wheels were common place on potters kick wheels, sewing machines and spinning wheels, farming and artisan machines and revolutionised many industries that relied on hand powered energy.
The wheel is in good condition for its age and has been painted. There are scuffs and scrapes on the paintwork, but it would take little effort to restore it to it former glory.
Please view the pics carefully to fully appreciate this amazing antique cast iron flywheel and to confirm the condition.
