Description:An early Dutch polychrome Delft plaque Circa 1840. Ref. CL25
Maker: Delft, the Netherlands
Date: Estimated date around 1840
History:An early 19th Century Dutch polychrome and blue Delft plaque, hand-painted in blue cobalt and white and set in a polychrome relief molded French Rococo style border with stylized scrolls. This is a beautiful and decorative example of the porcelain maker's art! The artist, with the initials J.V.L (signed on the reverse), has created a typical country scene of farm workers cutting the hay. Plaques were very popular in the Netherlands from as early as 1740, often depicting Biblical scenes or landscapes. Condition: In very good condition for its age. There are two pierced holes at the top strung with wire for suspension. The reverse shows the initials J.V.L, unfortunately I have not been able to identify the artist. There are a few spots where the glaze did not take, a typical feature of those times when the glazing process was not fully understood. The reverse shows a thick Tin glazing with numerous bubbles. One large chip near the bottom (see photo #7) and a very few minor chips to the edge of the frame.
