The earliest known evidence of the evil eye belief and protective amulets dates back at least 5,000 years to ancient Mesopotamia (around 3,300 BCE).
The concept spread throughout the Mediterranean and Middle East, appearing in ancient Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and later, Jewish, Islamic, and Hindu texts and folklore.
To protect against the jinx, people created talismans or amulets in the shape of a watchful eye. It, became particularly popular during the Ottoman era. Across cultures, these symbols were used on ships, in homes, worn as jewelry, and placed on newborn children to shield them from harm.
