This exceptionally rare antique (c1878) "Reward for Superior Merit" "Scientia Mores Emollit" medallion was designed by Davis Birn and was part as a collection of "Society and Award" medals which was recorded in the 1885 reference catalogue " Medallic portraits of Washington, with historical and critical notes and a descriptive catalogue of the coins, medals, tokens and cards". The medallion is in its original box and is 5.1cm across. The composition of the medallion is tin. The r everse of the medallion - The interior of a room, in which a woman is seated at a table writing, upon the table a globe, and at each side book-cases, and to the left a harp; on the base of the design, Davis Birm. In exergue, SCIENTIA MORES EMOLLIT. The o bverse of the medallion - REWARD OF SUPERIOR MERIT in four parallel lines, within a wreath of rose branches, tied by a bow. These medallions are magnificently rare and there is not a single other one available on the internet.  Please view the pics carefully to fully appreciate this super-rare medallion and to confirm the condition.
