This exceptionally rare antique (c1878) "Reward for Superior Merit" "Scientia Mores Emollit" medallion was designed by Davis Birn and was part as a collection of "Society and Award" medals which was recorded in the 1885 reference catalogue "Medallic portraits of Washington, with historical and critical notes and a descriptive catalogue of the coins, medals, tokens and cards". The medallion is in its original box and is 5.1cm across. The composition of the medallion is tin. The reverse of the medallion - The interior of a room, in which a woman is seated at a table writing, upon the table a globe, and at each side book-cases, and to the left a harp; on the base of the design, Davis Birm. In exergue, SCIENTIA MORES EMOLLIT. The obverse of the medallion - REWARD OF SUPERIOR MERIT in four parallel lines, within a wreath of rose branches, tied by a bow. These medallions are magnificently rare and there is not a single other one available on the internet.
