An extremely rare Antique Hibbert and Boughey Imari duo 1889 Ref.Nov 40B
This is an extremely rare duo, made by by Hibbart and Boughey in 1889. The pair show a very attractive dark, almost cobalt blue, flow-blue Imari design on a white porcelain. The rich turquoise blue-green colour as well as the rust-brown have been hand applied and the remnants of gilding appear on the edge of the cup and saucer. Why is this such a rare piece? What do we know about the company? Well, Hibbert & Boughey were from Staffordshire. They operated from Market Street, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, opening the business in 1889 ........and closed the business in 1889!! In fact, this appears to be the only design they created. There is absolutely no information on the company, apart from what I have given you. Their mark was a"Crown" over H & B, then in a hatched rectangle, the numbers R D 135869 which would have been the registration number. Although the company closed down, another company quickly copied this design. Guess there was always someone else waiting to steal good designs!
The cup and saucer are of earthenware with a striking design of cobalt blue, turquoise and burnt orange colors on a white background. Both the turquoise and burnt orange colors were applied by hand as an overglaze. This points to the fact that these colours would not take the high temperature used for the cobalt blue and the initial glazing. The rim of both the cup and saucer were gilded as well as the cup handle. The cup stands 5cm high with a diameter of 9.2cm, whilst the rather deep saucer is 3cm high with a diameter of just on 14cm. There is a very slight well in the saucer for the cup to rest in. Apart from a small firing crack on the cup (filled with glaze) both pieces remain in excellent condition.
