The author Peig Sayer's reminiscences were written down by her son during the 1930s, and were thus recorded as part of the Gaelic tradition of oral culture. It was later translated to English. Peig faithfully recounts the important events of her life and those of her beloved island, Great Blasket, where she spent the greater part of her life. She presents her own simple philosophy in a moving poetic style.
