Ancient Byzantine Empire: Heraclius (AD 610--641): GOLD Solidus: NGC graded Extremely Fine
The obverse of the coin shows the emperor Heraclius with his two sons Heraclius Constantine and Heraclonas, each crowned, wearing chlamys and holding a globus cruciger.
The globus cruciger also known as "the orb and cross” is an orb surmounted by a cross. It has been a Christian symbol of authority since the Middle Ages, used on coins, in iconography, and with a sceptre as royal regal.
The coin was struck at the Constantinople Mint during the reign of Heraclius, the emperor of the Byzantine Empire from 610 to 641. His rise to power began in 608, when he and his father, Heraclius the Elder, the Viceroy of Africa, led a revolt against the unpopular usurper Phocas.
