Alexander Jannaeus (reigned 10376 BCE) was a king and high priest of the Hasmonean dynasty in Judea. The son of John Hyrcanus, he inherited a kingdom that was expanding in territory and influence. Alexander pursued aggressive military campaigns to further extend his rule, gaining control of key regions such as the coastal cities and parts of Transjordan, thus enhancing Judeas position as a regional power.

His reign, however, was marked by internal strife and religious tensions. A supporter of the Sadducees, Alexander faced fierce opposition from the Pharisees, leading to a civil war that lasted several years. At one point, he famously ordered the crucifixion of 800 Pharisaic rebels, an act that solidified his reputation as a ruthless ruler.

Alexander is also known for minting bronze prutot coins that often depicted symbols like anchors and stars, reflecting his dual roles as king and high priest. Despite his harsh rule, he left behind a strengthened kingdom, which his widow, Salome Alexandra, governed after his death. His reign highlighted the complex interplay of politics, religion, and military power in late Second Temple Judea.
