The author was a student in Budapest when the Germans invaded Hungary in March 1944. The 800,000 Hungarian Jews were systematically despatched to camps where they were starved, beaten and killed. By the time the Russians came there were only a few thousand survivors among them the author who was one of only 2500 remaining at Sopron Camp.
