Originally written in 1945 with alternating chapters by Burroughs and Kerouac, the book is a fictionalised account of the killing of David Kammerer by Lucien Carr, a crime for which Kerouac was jailed as an accessory after the fact for not reporting the killing to the police. Burroughs was also arrested, but released on bail. The book was withheld from publication until the death of Lucien Carr, although quotations and excerpts appeared in places before this edition.
