Andrew Salgado (born 1982) is a highly acclaimed Canadian figurative artist based in London. He is widely regarded as one of the United Kingdom's leading contemporary figurative painters, best known for his large-scale, vibrant works that seamlessly blend portraiture with heavy abstraction and rich symbolic narratives.
Salgado's distinct visual language features layered oil canvases, bold geometric patterns, and a dynamic play between clarity and obscurity.
Heavily visceral and emotive, his early portraiture was deeply influenced by a cathartic, violent assault he survived in 2008. This initial era intensely explored themes of masculinity, vulnerability, and the destruction of identity.
Over the years, his compositions have shifted toward more playful, complex storytelling. While the human figure remains core to his art, he integrates theatrical backdrops, folkloric references, low-hanging moons, and themes drawn from nature and literature.
He frequently employs an impasto technique with mixed media to construct heavily textured surfaces.
