Offered for sale is a fine stoneware bottle base hand made and decorated by famous South African studio potter Andrew Walford probably dating to the 1970's or 80's. Like the late Tim Morris , Andrew Walford is British by birth, he was born in Bournemouth in 1942 and emmigrated to South Africa with his parents in the late 1940's. Andrew Walford is a graduate from the Durban School of Arts however he has lived and worked abroad in Europe , Scandinavia and Japan receiving guidance and mentorship from the most famous 20th Century studio potters including Michael Cardew, Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada. He is arguably the most famous of the 2nd generation South African studio potters working in the Anglo Oriental tradition. Since 1970 he has worked from a studio in the remote Shongweni Hills in KwaZulu Natal near Pietermaritzburg. This vase is a fine example of his mature style with a simple understated form, and elegant hand painted motif of a bird strongly evocative of Piccasso's famous Dove of Peace. The vase is hand thrown from locally prepared stoneware clay and high fired in a custom built brick kiln fired with parafin. The vase is signed on the base with the artists stylized AW initials.
