Anemone is a genus of about 120 species of flowering plants in the family Ranunculaceae, native to the temperate zones. It is closely related to Pulsatilla ('Pasque flower') and Hepatica; some botanists include both of these genera within Anemone. Anemone species are perennials that have basal leaves with long leaf-stems that can be upright or prostrate. Leaves are simple or compound with lobed, parted, or undivided leaf blades. The leaf margins are toothed or entire.

Anemone hupehensis is a parent to many of the popular hybrid Japanese Anemone. The branching stems of poppy-like flowers are superb for cut flowers. Plants form a medium-tall mound of ferny green leaves, with single or semi-double white to pink blossoms in late summer and autumn.

It is useful in the sunny border, or in part shade among Hosta species and ferns. In a suitable, moist site this will spread to form a solid patch. Good low-maintenance perennial. In colder regions this should be mulched well for the first winter. They are easily divided in early spring.
