ANGAZA AFRIKA: African Art Now
Angaza Afrika, the Swahili for shed light on Africa, is a statement of this book's mission: to illuminate Africa' s immensely fertile artistic landscape.
It brings together more than 60 of Africa' s most creative contemporary artists from across the continent as well as from the African diaspora. It illustrates the diversity and vitality of these artists, whose work leaps off the page in more than 350 colour images. In addition to painters, sculptors, ceramic artists and photographers, there are a number of artists whose work embraces performance and installation.
The following South African artists are featured in the book: Jane Alexander, Willie Bester, Jackson Hlungwani, William Kentridge, David Koloane, Zwelethu Mthethwa, Owen Ndou and Sandile Zulu.
The author, Chris Spring, is curator of the African galleries at the British Museum. A practising artist himself, he is the author of many books on Africa and its cultural heritage, including African Arms and Armour (1995), African Textile Design (1997), Africa: Arts and Cultures (2000) and Silk in Africa (2002).
