A very rare photo album containing 24 original photographs (not prints) taken by a British officer, Captain Smart during the Anglo Boer War. The photos depict important events (e.g. the capture of Van Wyk, the taking of Botha's Pass, General Buller at Machadodorp etc.) and camp life in the British military camps. The album was put together by the captain's future wife, Daisy Foster and is dated June,1903. Each photo is accompanied by a handwritten description. These are sometimes humorous, sometimes poignant e.g. comparing the living conditions between the officer's and lower ranking soldiers. On the inside cover of the album is handwritten "With best wishes from Daisy W. Foster. June 1903. Records of the Boer War, made by Captain Smart, afterwards D. Foster's husband. (signed) M. Hartridge". Please see thumbnail pics above of some of the images and a list below of the inscriptions as written with all the photos. The condition of the photos and album is excellent considering it's age. A rare and important historical record.
