Anglo-Boer War Artefacts from Genl. Smuts Invasion of the Cape Colony

Historic items which belonged to a decorated (ABO, DTD, LVW) member of Genl. J.C. Smuts commando, during the guerrilla phase of the War in the Cape Colony (1901).

Included is the field cornets hymnal (Staten Generaal Psalmen Nevens De Gezangen, 1875), with his name signed (in his own hand) on the inside cover.  Per Fransjohan Pretorius (Life on Commando during the Anglo-Boer War), According to several combatants, a service held in the open was a moving experience.  The whole of nature was a church and the silence made the heart receptive ... During the religious services, or afterwards around the fires at night, the burghers liked to sing hymns.  True to their creed, Gereformeerde Church members confined themselves to psalms.

Also, the VCs silver plated coin dispenser with ZAR coins, a framed print (scanned from the Elliot Collection) of Smuts Commando near OOkiep (April, 1902) , and a fine leather-bound folder with ephemera and original research (including an extract from the field cornets unpublished diary as relates to the second invasion of the Cape Colony), an original manuscript note written by field cornet on his participation in the Boer War, extracts from Selections from the Smuts Papers, map prints, and other ephemera.
