An collection of personal effects and exonumia of Sarel Johannes Petrus Bloem, ZARP (Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek Politie, Johannesburg Politie), who served under Kommandant van Dam and saw action at the Siege of Ladysmith, Donkerhoek (Battle of Diamond Hill), Dalmanutha (Battle of Bergendal) and other battles (details per Vorm B, copy included in the lot). Bloem was taken prisoner at Dalmanutha on 27 August 1900 (one of the nineteen prisoners captured by the British) and sent to St. Helena (POW 11977). SJP Bloem was awarded the ABO.
Amongst the items are a rare Post Office Savings book (Postspaarbank der Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek) with gilt coat of arms, a Postspaarbank deposit slip, a Nationale Bank der Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek Beperkt. cheque book (complete with counterfoils and unused cheques), seven original photographs of Bloem (three of which were taken on St. Helena, and one of Bloem in the field), an obscure booklet "CORNELIUS VAN VUUREN JOHANNE[SBURG?]", a Briars Camp Pass from St. Helena, a Transvaal Treasury Repatriation Promissory Note, and a four-page manuscript letter (signed by Bloem) addressed to his children.
