Anglo-Boer War Photograph (Victoria Mounted Rifles)
An original Boer War photograph (15.5 X 11.5cm, mounted on board), believed to be from Maj William Barr's collection, and possibly of the Second Contingent of the Victoria Mounted Rifles.
According to Ken Gillings (in the Military History Journal, Vol 3 No 3 - June1975), 'Major William Francis Barr came to South Africa with the Second Contingent of the Victoria Mounted Rifles at the end of 1899, holding the rank of Sergeant. After the War, he settled in Vryheid, Natal, where he was joined by his childhood sweetheart. In 1906 he served in the Bambatha Rebellion, whilst in the First World War he served under General Louis Botha in South West Africa and under General J.C. Smuts in East Africa where he was awarded the Italian Medal for Military Valour. In later years, as a member of 10th Mounted Rifles (Botha Ruiters) he received the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Long Service Medal'.
