The name of the recipient was removed from the rim. According to an expert, the reason for this was that after the Boer War, poor soldiers thirsty for a drink, passed their medals off as 5-shilling (crown) pieces and had their names removed from the medals to avoid embarrassment.

The medal certainly saw some circulation but even in this state, is eagerly sought after by collectors of Boer War era medals & memorabilia. Please see following picture…
