Description: This edition of Blessing in Disguise is a re-release of Annie Haslam's Renaissance's dynamite 1995 album, set during the odd period of "dueling Renaissances." While Michael Dunford moved forward with Stephanie Adlington, Haslam produced this incredible pop opus -- which may be the best "Renaissance" album since Azure d'Or and A Song for All Seasons. While it contains only one number written by original writers Dunford and Betty Newsinger (nee Thatcher) (the haunting "Love Lies, Love Dies"), the set starts out with the dynamite one-two punch of the practically Gregorian title track and the pulsating new wave kicker "Pool of Tears." The rest of the collection is stellar, ranging from the haunting "Whisper from Marseilles" to the Latin-flavored "What He Seeks" to the truly inspiring "A New Life." For fans of early Renaissance, Haslam has even included "The Sweetest Kiss," capitalizing on her turning-classical-works-into-virtuoso-pop-songs style that Sarah Brightman and Charlotte Church have turned into a genre. There is not a clunker in the bunch. In the battle of "dueling Renaissances," Annie Haslam's Renaissance definitely won the battle. Along with Still Life, this is her best solo project ever. A great pop album, a great Annie Haslam album, and a great Renaissance album. What more could you ask for? Essential listening. [This reissue also includes bonus material.] Tomas Mureika.
