ANTIQUATED OIL LAMP ~ MEDIEVAL GOTHIC
In good, solid condition and functioning
The material of which the lamp is made is uncertain
Neither brass nor copper; possibly pewter or iron. Heavy for its size
Finding an equivalent for comparison and dating proves difficult
Comparison with architecture is more obvious
The three corners of the base of the lamp feature creatures; these appear different to mythical and magical creatures of many other lamps
The creatures appear similar to the Gothic style of the Middle Ages
These creatures were typically part of adornment of Medieval Cathedrals, known as gargoyles and grotesques
Some of the creatures have streamlined bodies, long necks, and expressive, animal-like heads, and often they also have feathered wings
Many theories exist for their frightening appearance, one of which is the guarding of the Cathedral and the faithful and warding off evil
This lamp has a modest shaft and would probably be a personal possession
Oil is poured into the belly of the lamp which saturates the wick drawn through the three spouts
The lit wick shines on the creature below, which wards off evil to the comfort of the owner
