MARKINGS: In 1901, the company introduced a new Doulton mark with the lion, crown and intersecting D motif. The new mark and use of the name Royal Doulton as opposed to Doulton celebrate the grant of the Royal Warrant to Doulton by King Edward VII in 1901. After 1922 a similar back stamp was used, however it was missing the crown. From 1928 the standard mark with lion, crown and D motif was supplemented by a date number related to the year of production. A prominent 1 signifies 1928 and the numbering continue to 30 in 1957. The simple rule is that adding 1927 to the number give the year of production.
In about 1930 a new form of the standard mark was introduced bearing the words Made in England above the Royal Doulton name and this mark was used until 1993. The date numbers referred to above may, or may not, accompany this mark. Various forms of this mark were used over its 50-odd year life. The words Bone China and Fine China may appear below the mark. Fine China was the wording used from 1973 and can be found on Royal Doulton ornaments that are still produced today.
