A VERY RARE ANTIQUE (1863-1877) BRITTANIA METAL ELECTROPLATED HOT WATER AND TEA URN. Ball footed with Domed Finialled Cover. The vase-shaped body featuring integral cast leafy-scroll handle. The body with typical bright-cut & incised Neoclassical-style vacant cartouche with beautiful shell, leaf, flower &strapwork decoration. Attached spigot tap & attached turned bone mounted handle. On a conforming circular rising stem & square platform base on ball feet. ANTIQUE JOHN NODDER SHEFFIELD BACKSTAMP ON THE UNDERSIDE FOR PERIOD 1863 - 1877.

BMEP IN GOTHIC LETTERS WHICH MEANS BRITANNIA METAL ELECTRO PLATED JOHN NODDER AND SONS SHEFFIELD 5602 4 PINT (2,27LITERS) SIZE: 23CM WIDE FROM HANDLE TO HANDLE 14CM DIAMETER AT WIDEST 38CM HIGH CONDITION: ONE FOOT BROKEN OFF AND LOST - REPLACED BY A BRASS BALL FOOT. RESTORATION TO BONE FINIAL OF LID. PLEASE SEE PHOTOS. THE BEAUTIFUL ENGRAVINGS STILL LOOK LIKE IT WAS DONE YESTERDAY.
BRITTANIA METAL SILVERPLATED:Britannia is a silver-white alloy similar to pewter (used by many of the Sheffield makers.) The nice thing is that it contains no lead and has a color of its own akin to silver so if the silver plating wears, the base metal beneath is less obvious to the eye. JOHN NODDER: The company was launched in 1863 by John Nodder (1802-1877), who was the son of Alexander Nodder (a silver plater) and his wife, Sarah. JOHN BECAME A MASTER BRITANNIA METAL SMITH. By 1865,it had moved to Taranaki Works, Dun Fields, off Shalesmoor. The partners were John Nodder and his sons, Alexander Smith Nodder (1832-1895) and Joseph Nodder (1840-1899). Alexander withdrew in 1868. He became a coal and firewood dealer. John Nodder died on 4 January 1877, aged 74. He left under £100. Joseph Nodder continued the business. In 1881, he employed 22 workers (ten men, six women, three boys, and four girls). In 1897, John Nodder & Sons in Brookhill became Ltd, with Frank Askham Nodder (1867-1932) Josephs son as manager and partner. Joseph died on 13 July 1899, aged 59. Nodders were liquidated in 1900.
