This is a beautifully carved shell cameo of a Bacchante which is set in a 14K Gold frame (acid tested).
The cameo including the frame measures 2 1/4" ( 5.7cm) x 1 3/4" (4.4cm)
(2 1/16"(5.2cm) including pin width).
As you can see, this cameo is very well carved with grapes in the lady's hair and a ceremonial staff seen over her left shoulder.
Her facial features are also very well carved, especially her eye.
The frame is a bezel setting with overlapping prongs which hold the cameo and it has an unusual
scalloped edge which is beautifully engraved.
The pin stem is original to the setting and slips into a classic "c" clasp which looks to have been
replaced.
There is a ring attached to the back of the setting at the top which suspends a gold chain and safety pin for security.
The cameo and frame is in excellent condition.
The circa of this cameo is around the 1860's and made in Italy and was probably purchased by someone on the Grand Tour.
