ANTIQUE WOODEN WATER CANTEEN OR FLASK
It is near impossible to supply any accurate information regarding this item. An early wooden barrel/canteen/cask held together by forged iron bands. Forge welding was indicative of the 1800's. This is the sort of water cask that was commonly used by the Voortrekkers as can be seen by some of the images I have uploaded of wagons. These would be hung on the side of a wagon to carry water. Other uses would be on a primitive field farm to carry water, military ones would generally have a strap instead of a handle so it could easily be slung over the shoulder to carry. There are no markings on this particular one so it is impossible to tell it's exact history.
SIZE: Diameter 23cm, Width/depth 14cm, Handle stands 8.3cm above the cask.
WEIGHT: 2.1Kg
CONDITION: EXCELLENT For something that I estimate to be well over 100 years old, it is in superb condition. I am not sure if it would still be able to carry water, if one was to try you would need to submerge it in water for several days to get the wood to swell and hence seal. It is missing the plug or bung. Please study the pictures for a more detailed description.
