Antique 18ct Gold 'Fede Gimmel' or 'Claddagh' Ring
This wonderful, very scarce, 18ct gold, Victorian 'Fede Gimmel' ring, sometimes referred to as a 'Claddagh' ring, features two clasped hands with small turquoise stones set in the cuffs and a hidden heart, revealed when the hands are pulled apart. It comprises of three gold interlocking and engraved bands, held together by a tiny pin that allows the bands to swivel apart and to come together as one, with the clasping of the hands forming the catch, a symbol of the union of two people. Considering this amazing ring is approximately 140 years old, it's in great condition and functions well. The ring weighs 4,9g with a ring size of 'L 1/2'.
NOTE: The 'Fede' (Italian for faith, trust, and loyalty) ring has a long history going back to the 16th and 17th century and portrays two hands clasped together, a symbol of love and friendship, and were historically used as engagement rings. The name comes from an Italian phrase, 'mani in fede' (Hands clasped in Faith).
This special ring comes with a detailed valuation, with a replacement of R30 000, a copy of which is listed in the photographs. (The valuation was done by a very reputable Gemmologist but doesnt take antiquity and rarity into consideration).
