Antique 18th Century genuine Dutch Delft Tile - Ref. Nov2
Although tin-glazed pottery production began in the Netherlands at Antwerp already in the early 1500's, it was not until the mid 17th Century that the well-known blue 'Delft' tiles came into their own. But, although the town of Delft became synonymous with the 'blue Delft" most production actually took place in Rotterdam and Friesland. I suspect that the above tile may have originated in Friesland as it shows a typical coarse, white, grainy base. Being just under 1cm thick, this suggests that is is more likely from the mid to late 18th century, earlier tiles being around 1.3 cm thick.
Tiles were painted with scenes from everyday life, children playing, soldiers, (remember, the Netherlands was at war with the Spanish), women doing their routine jobs, ships (the Netherlands were at their peak era in trading), landscapes, and, of course, being a very devout nation, Biblical scenes, of which no less than 592 separate scenes relating to the Bible have been found!!
The above tile is in good condition, considering it's age. There are a few chips on the edges, a fine crack (it does not penetrate to the back) most likely from its removal from some ancient wall. All in all, it is a typical example of a genuine Dutch 'Delft" tile.  Measurements are approximately 12.70cm x 12.70cm x 0.80cm thick.
This is a genuine antique. Please remember the classification of an 'antique' is that it should be 100 years old, OR MORE. There are many articles being offered as 'antiques' when, clearly, they are not.
