This beautiful mantel clock dates from the late 19th or early 20th Century.. The arch-topped mahogany case is in good original condition with a lovely rich patina. It has classical Tuscan columns on either side of the fully opening glazed door and a shaped plinth base resting on four bun feet. The silvered dial has foliate engraved spandrels and a matted centre. The chapter ring has black, engraved Roman numerals and outside minute track. The fully opening front door has thick beveled glass. The design is very much in the style of the renowned German clockmaker Gustav Becker.
The base bears a silver plaque which is engraved "Presented to Mr. Cecil S. Dawkins. On the occasion of his marriage. From the Harrismith Railway Staff. March 1913."
An interesting side note from my research : Cecil Scott Dawkins was the son of Captain Thomas Butcher Scott Dawkins of the Cape Mounted Rifles who participated in the 5th Basuto War of 1881.
The clock's mechanism is running well and has it's original pendulum and key. The key states "Made in England" with the number "8". The inside of the rear door has two labels stating "No 3311" and "Gong Orchester".
The clock is not striking so this might need a repair or service.
A very handsome piece in great antique condition. Please see images above for more detail.
