Before the Metropolitan Police whistle, officers relied on heavy and unwieldy rattles to communicate over long distances.

The Metropolitan whistle is a whistle that was created by Joseph Hudson and is an icon of the Metropolitan Police forces history. The whistle was created after an unfortunate incident when a violin was dropped, producing an ear splitting sound. The Metropolitan Police force was changing over from rattles to whistles and this whistle manufactured by Hudsons there emerged as the whistle of preference by this premier police force.
