OUR ITEMS IS MARKED TRIPLE DEPOSIT MAPPIN & WEBB PRINCES PLATE LONDON & SHEFFIELD
The use of the trademark "Mappin and Webb's Prince's Plate - London & Sheffield" is recorded from 1899 to the 1930s which offers a frame of dates for this piece. Princes plate is a higher quality than normal silver plate, as the process uses a triple deposit of silver, and has an added coating of protection on all vertices and edges of their pieces of cutlery. The result of this is that these Mappin and Webb Princes plate items of cutlery wear more like sterling silver, and have far more durability.

The largest manufacturers introduced, on a voluntary basis, a dating system of their silver plate based on series of letters of various style contained into shields or geometric figures. The first was Elkington (1841), followed by Walker & Hall (1884) and Mappin & Webb (1900).
Series used from 1900 to 1927 as UPPERCASE STANDARD ENGLISH LETTERS: Ours has an uppercase letter "Q" which dates it to 1915.

MAPPIN & WEBB (1775-current):
Mappin & Webb traces its origins to a silver workshop founded in Sheffield in 1775; 247 years ago by Jonathan Mappin. They became Mappin, Webb & Co. in 1862 after John Mappin (grandson of Jonathan) was joined by his brother-in-law George Webb. Mappin & Webb expanded internationally beginning in the 1890s. Its first overseas store was established in none other than Johannesburg South Africa.
However, the family lost control of the business in the 1950s, when it was the subject of a hostile takeover. Subsequently, all international stores closed in the second half of the 20th century. Since then, it has changed ownership many times.
Mappin & Webb merged with Elkington and Walker & Hall in 1963, the merged company being named British Silverware Ltd. In 1973, Mappin & Webb was bought by Sears Holdings Ltd which itself was eventually bought by Baugur which became insolvent in 2010. The company now forms part of the retail group Watches of Switzerland and continues to produce silverware and jewellery collections.
