AN ANTIQUE 1920S BRITISH MADE SWAN BRAND ELECTRIC KETTLE MADE BY BULLPITT AND SONS.
A VERY EARLY MODEL (SWAN BRAND PATENT NO STILL PENDING) WHERE THE HEATING ELEMENT IS SUBMERGED IN THE WATER AND NOT PLACED IN A SEPARATE COMPARTMENT UNDER THE WATER.
IT HAS A BAKELITE HANDLE AND 3 BAKELITE KNOB FEET. THE COPPER LID IS IN TACT WITH A BAKELITE KNOB.
The first kettle to use electricity to heat water came from Carpenter Electric Company in Chicago in 1891. However, the water took more than 10 minutes to come to a boil because of a major design problem the heating element was in a separate compartment, rather than in the water as is the case in modern kettles.
In the 1920s, the Swan Company solved the problem by sealing the element in a metallic cylinder and placing it directly inside the water. Heating occurred much faster and before long, other manufacturers used a similar design.
BULLPITT AND SONS (1890-1989): Bulpitt & Sons Ltd was an electrical goods manufacturer and limited company in Birmingham, England, established as a brass founder in the late 19th century. In the early 20th century the company registered The "Swan Brand" name.
In the 1920s, the company began manufacturing domestic electrical kettles. They developed the first submersible electric heating element.
In the 1970s, the company became a subsidiary of BSR (Housewares) Ltd.
The rival French company Moulinex acquired the Swan Brand in 1988 and Bulpitt & Sons (Swan Brand) Ltd was eventually dissolved on 21 May 1989, just short of a century after the company's foundation.
