Broken base, as is often the case with antique objects, as well as a few small, almost invisible chip marks, which is not unusual for an old object like this. I have used an old whalebone as a plinth/ base, which seems to work very well. Coin design incorporated into the velvet-ish looking cap could provide a clue to exact origin. According to research these (French/ Austrian-looking) plaster busts range in price from R2,300 to R10,900, of which, by comparison, this is a much better design.
