A superb antique piece, this 9 carat rose gold cameo (estimated to be during the Victorian period, c1880-1900) has mounting designed to be worn as a brooch or pendant. The large cameo is carved from a Sardonyx shell (Cassis madagascariensis shell), in a classical style with mythological theme of Flora, goddess of flowers, spring time and most importantly youth. She is pictured with a basket of flowers and a cherub companion. This cameo is particularly powerful in symbolism, and the minute hand-carved detail of this piece is outstanding. Tested and verified as 9 carat rose gold, and partial marks are visible on the bottom of the reverse side.
