This is a very beautiful salad bowl from the American Brilliant Period (1876-1917), featuring a heavy lead crystal blank with sharp, intricate geometric cuts characteristic of the era.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition with a brilliant polish and very fine quality of cutting.
Size: 20cm x 7.5cm
Weight: 1.2kg
Period: American Brilliant Period (ABP), circa 1890s to early 1900s.
Maker/Pattern: Unsigned. The combination of a large 16-point base star and a field of checkerboard-style cross-hatching and large concave circles (punties) is consistent with geometric ABP patterns, though the specific pattern name is unidentified without a signature or catalogue verification. Potential manufacturers include Libbey, Hawkes, Dorflinger, or one of the many other renowned ABP companies.
Pattern Details:
Base: A prominent, deeply cut 16-point star (likely a Brunswick or Hobstar variation) dominates the center of the bowl's bottom.
Body: Features
Concave Circles/Punties: Large, polished, smooth circular depressions (often called punties or bullseyes).
Checkerboard Motif: The spaces surrounding the circles are cut with a precise checkerboard pattern consisting of fine cross-hatching (also known as 'Russian' cut) alternating with the smooth circles. This creates a high-contrast, brilliant effect.
Rim: The rim is finished with a classic scalloped edge.
