Antique 'Art Nouveau' coffee pot. John Carr & Sons 1861-1884 Ref. Nov.120
North Shields Pottery was established at the Low Lights, North Shields in c.1814 possibly by Collingwood & Beall.
It had a very checkered history, trading first as "William Collingwood & Company" , a partnership with John Thompson, but, dissolved in February 1819, William Collingwood carried on alone. Unfortunately, he was soon declared bankrupt, and, by 1823 the business was owned by Nicholas Bird and trading as "Bird & Co."
In 1838 the firm became known as "Carr and Patton" and were able, by their alliance with an eminent Staffordshire manufactory,to procure the newest models and patterns of any article of china of the best quality and fashion at manufacturers prices. By 1846, Carr and Patton were listed as the owners of both North Shields Pottery and the Phoenix Pottery in Newcastle, and by 1850 the North Shields pottery was trading as "Carr & Co.". A few years later, in 1855, they announced the opening of a show room in Norfolk Street in the town, under the name of "John Carr & Son" In 1861, the name changed to "John Carr & Sons" and the firm remained as such until it closed around April 1884 after two catastrophic fires.
This is a typical'Art Nouveau' styled Coffee Pot, having a black mottled glazing on an earthenware base. The mottled appearance is not evident on the base, so, whether the mottled appearance was intentional, it is hard to decide. Heavily gilded, and having a pewter lid with the maker's name imprinted. (The pewter lid could have been a better fit, in my opinion) . It stands 19cm high to the tip the spout, not including the base it stands on. The diameter of the pot at its widest is 110cm. The base is 2.7cm high with a diameter of 18cm. As to be expected, there is some loss of gilding to the rim and handle. There are two small chips to the base rim of the pot (see photo on left) but no further damage nor cracks.
This is a genuine antique. Please remember the classification of an 'antique' is that it should be 100 years old, OR MORE. There are many articles being offered as 'antiques' when, clearly, they are not.
