This double pan balancing scale with its own wooden box was manufactured by W&T Avery, Birmingham, England. The company was founded in the early 18th century and took the name W & T Avery in 1818.
The balance beam and all the parts pertaining to the scale are brass. The wooden case is probably Mahogany and serves as the base for the scale. The words CWS Dept – Test Scale – has been stencilled in gold on the top of the box.
When assembled, the scale measures 54,5 cm in height from the base of the wooden case where it screws in. The width of the balance beam measures 34 cm. The measurement of the box is 62 cm x 28,5 cm by 8 cm. The scale came with 15 weights which are not all Avery weights. The weights vary from 1 Oz to 2 lbs.
Condition: The wooden box shows to-be-expected wear and tear but is well cared for. The hinges and the clasps are all in good working order. All the brass parts are in a good condition except for the right pan that cracked where the balancing chain hooks onto the pan. This pan’s chain is also broken. (See photograph below).
Manufacturing stamps: The stamp W&T Avery appears on the pedal in the front and on both sides of the balancing beam. Patent Agate Balance also appears on both sides of the balancing beam and the number 12336 appears in centre of the balancing beam.
Some of the stamps are faded but I photographed it as best I could. There is another stamp – CLASS 1 or CLASS A on the brass part that supports the balancing beam.

The scale is one of a collection of 7 large antique scales that belonged to a Geology Professor from the University of Pretoria (now deceased).
